Thoughts on Album Structure
Listening to Death Cab for Cutie’s “Plans”. It sort of has the effect of musical heroin injected directly into my veins. So beautiful. That doesn’t happen very often to me these days. My hat’s off to them.
There’s sort of a recurring structure in how (many) albums are put together that I love:
- Intro song - this isn’t usually the single, but is this shiny thing that warms up the listener. I love intro songs.
- The Single. Now warmed up - they hit you with the super hook.
- Everything else.
- Giant opus song.
- (optional) little denoument ditty.
