Okay, so the Blue Shift album is taking a long time. In the meantime, however, I have been sitting on an album’s worth of material that I wrote ~~during my incarceration~~ while living in New Jersey. This project is called “New Jersey Slumbers”. Here’s a demo track from that - called “Chasm”.

Ok so after a period of us not getting much accomplished, a little movement in the last couple of days. Klinowski has added an initial pass of drums on Take the Arrow Out, and I’m experimenting with some loops on other tracks. This is Klinowski’s drum tracks.

Note that this is the wonderful world of MIDI, and these are by all means NOT the final drum sounds. Not by a long shot. Mostly the takeaway from this is the basic beat (not even the fills), which I do like.

I got a couple more tracks ready for drums on the weekend. Milanetti and I spoke about the glacial rate of progress we’re sustaining.

The main issue is that this music project gets a little slice of left over time from each of us, so its difficult to project a rate of progress for it. It moves veeerrrryyy slllooooww.

Mike and I agreed that the easiest thing to do was simply to adjust our expectations about how fast this project will move. I figure as long as something is happening with it I’ll be satisfied. Its when it stops entirely that I start having problems with it.

Listening to Death Cab for Cutie’s “Plans”. It sort of has the effect of musical heroin injected directly into my veins. So beautiful. That doesn’t happen very often to me these days. My hat’s off to them.

There’s sort of a recurring structure in how (many) albums are put together that I love:

Intro song - this isn’t usually the single, but is this shiny thing that warms up the listener. I love intro songs.
The Single. Now warmed up - they hit you with the super hook.
Everything else.
Giant opus song.
(optional) little denoument ditty.

It’s cheesy, but I keep coming back to the Wizard of Oz analogy. There’s Oz, in beautiful technicolor, and there’s Kansas, in drab black and white. Oz = music, and Kansas = everything else.

New song demo: “Take the Arrow Out”. This is a bit of a departure from the other Blue Shift material, but we have done stuff like this in the past. The arrow in question is a buddhist analogy about human suffering, but I can’t seem to find the citation right now (sorry). (Again this is just a song demo, so not necessarily the greatest performance or recording quality - mea culpa).
